The Age of Anxiety

As I was searching for pictures to represent this time period I came across this picture entitled "The Radiator Building at Night" by Georgia O'Keefe. I felt that this picture really summarized how people felt as they came to the new prospering city and the feeling that they could accomplish anything they wanted here. The painting shows how a single building lit up the dark night sky, but the building is not doing it alone, each light that is turned on inside the building contributes to lighting up the building. I think that this is a type of symbol of how when everyone works together towards a common goal, such as lighting up the night sky, you become a beacon in the darkness for other people to realize that they too can accomplish great things. Along with being a symbol for the great things that people can do when they work together, I think that this painting is showing the success that a big city can offer. The painting has a kind of glitzy feel to it, almost like it is saying 'come to New York where everyone can be a celebrity.' I think that this is the sort of things that helped to bring people out of the Great Depression, seeing that there is still hope in the world.
